Why do some dogs snap at people while they are eating?

A dog who snaps is a dog who is communicating to you that he is your leader and he simply wishes that you leave him alone while he eats (leader eats first... it's canine instinct). This is why it is so important to be 100% pack leader at all times consistently. A dog communicates by growling, then snapping and biting. It is the responsibility of the humans to understand this and be alpha 100% of the time or you will be tested by your dog. Simple start from the “controlling the food”. Do not put all the food into the bowl. Keep adding it. That way your puppy soon understands that you are in control and if he needs more food - he has to cooperate. If you are having a problem with your puppy growling and snapping at the other dog in the house – try different approach. Make all of your dogs be in front of you and give them some snack or small pieces of treats one by one. Make sure that every one is whiting its tern. In a few days of that exercise all your dogs will get use to eat together and understand that no one is taking his food from away. That kind of citation usually arises if puppy is coming from the big litter. It does not mean that your dog is growing up aggressive. That is simple pack instincts and should / can be managing from the beginning.
